Update: The new nav bar

December 28th, 2007

So here is the link, http://www.startrek4u.com/startrek4u/index.html The page may periodically go down or become unusable, just wait a bit and reload the page. It doesn’t look right in IE, but what does. So I may find myself writing an entirely new style sheet just for IE!

I would love to get your opinion on it,

Leopard…

October 29th, 2007

I like the way Malt Wasburg said it () Leopard isnt required for mac users, but it adds a lot of value.

Here is what I love most about the leopard upgrade

Spotlight! in tiger i tried to use Spotlight search as an app launcher, (cmd+space [search_string] *wait a few seconds* cmd+enter) problem was the search wouldnt bring the right thing up first.
now it is just cmd+space [search] enter! the results you get back are instant, it is just amazing!

I love virtual desktops on linux, but never found a good way to add virtual desktops on a mac. Spaces seems to be a solid solution that I will stick with. The ability to rearrange desktops and applications within each desktop is great.

I have cleaned up my desktop a lot now with stacks. I hated things on my desktop (on my mac anyway) if you goto the desktop thread you can see how I had most of the things I needed to keep easy access to on my desktop (HDD, Sites, Projects, junk, Windows VM, and a few files) now all i have on my desktop is my HDD and the win VM. I placed the rest of those folders and files in my documents folder, and just created a stack for them in my dock. It gives me the instant access I want to them, while cleaning up my desktop.

Overall the OS is much snappier (after a single reboot) at first there were some things going on in the background indexing and such, but once all that was done and I rebooted, everything is very fast.

UI stuff:
Translucent menu bar grows on you (or me at least)
3D dock just didnt cut it for me, I made it black (like it looks when you put it on the side)

New finder is much more intuitive, with a bread crumb location bar

and quicklook being such a time saver when previewing a file!

Leopard sure isnt a required upgrade because Tiger is rock solid, but I dont think you will have any regrets upgrading.

If you have any specific questions, just ask and ill answer. :)

Google to buy Digg?

May 2nd, 2007

A couple of days ago, an 16 character hexadecimal number was released into the wild, and showed up on Digg. The DMCA contacted Digg, via a cease and diciest letter, demanding them to remove the number or otherwise face legal action. Digg complied and took down the post. Later someone reposted it, the post quickly rose to the front page. Digg was compliant yet again with the cease and diciest, and promptly removed it. This provoked a massive out-roar from the community. Last night Digg was flooded with posts that all included the number. Every story on the front page was a protest at Digg’s actions to censor what goes on their site. In the mass Digg would take down the posts, and every second more would be added.

The next day Digg founder, Kevin Rose, address the massive community with this response.

Today was an insane day. And as the founder of Digg, I just wanted to post my thoughts…

In building and shaping the site I’ve always tried to stay as hands on as possible. We’ve always given site moderation (digging/burying) power to the community. Occasionally we step in to remove stories that violate our terms of use (eg. linking to pornography, illegal downloads, racial hate sites, etc.). So today was a difficult day for us. We had to decide whether to remove stories containing a single code based on a cease and desist declaration. We had to make a call, and in our desire to avoid a scenario where Digg would be interrupted or shut down, we decided to comply and remove the stories with the code.

But now, after seeing hundreds of stories and reading thousands of comments, you’ve made it clear. You’d rather see Digg go down fighting than bow down to a bigger company. We hear you, and effective immediately we won’t delete stories or comments containing the code and will deal with whatever the consequences might be.

If we lose, then what the hell, at least we died trying.

Digg on,

Kevin

The community quickly stopped posting the number after this response. However the Damage may be done already. If the DMCA decided to sue Digg for allowing the content then this will likely be the end of Digg. While Digg have a massive user-base it is a relatively small company.

Digg is not the first to see threats by copyright protection associations. YouTube has also see this. So how did they get out of it? well the offered to take it down. However the founders realized that it’s about time to sell the monster they had built. and who better to sell it to then a beast? Google!

What would happen if Google bought out Digg? Google doesn’t care about the DMCA, the MPAA, or the IRAA. Google has the money to fight back in court.
Copy protection is impossible and it is about time that the DMCA realize this! but I fear that they only way they will is by a large company standing up, Apple has done it and in less than a month we will have DRM free music on iTunes! now record companies are now in talks to offer DRM free music on iTunes as well.

Perhaps we need Google to stand up with apple and the me too company (Microsoft) to finally get rid of DRM on all media!

Ballmer: ‘No chance Apple iPhone will get any significant marketshare”

April 30th, 2007
Monday, April 30, 2007 - 10:42 AM EDTMicrosoft CEO Steve Ballmer was interviewed by USA Today’s David Lieberman at the sixth USA TODAY CEO Forum, in conjunction with the University of Washington Business School. The interview took place in front of an audience.

Ballmer is the laughing stalk of the tech industry. The guy said the same thing about microsoft when it first started! Apple would be trilled with 1% market share! that is what they are shooting for. The phone industry is bigger than any other consumer electronic! Ballmer is scared to death that this will be the next iPod!
